VIEW FROM DUNADD FORT HILL
An
ancient hill fort in Argyll and Bute which lies 4 miles (6½ km)
northwest of Lochgilphead. Contructed in the 6th Century on the banks
of the River Add, it is regarded as the centre of the ancient Scottish
Kingdom of Dalriada. Carved into the natural rock on the summit are a
ceremonial font and a footprint, associated with the crowning of the Kings
of the Scots. As part of the crowning ritual, the Kings placed their foot
in the footprint, while facing towards Ben Cruachan, which had symbolic
significance. Also carved in the rock is a Pictish symbol, placed there
following the capture of the Fort by the Picts.
